Und immer wieder, wenn ich mich müde gesehn an der Menschen Gesichtern, so vielen Spiegeln [unsäglicher]1 Torheit, hob ich das Aug über die Häuser und Bäume empor zu euch, ihr ewigen Gedanken des Himmels. Und eure Größe und Freiheit erlöste mich immer wieder, und ich dachte mit euch über Länder und Meere hinweg und hing mit euch überm Abgrund Unendlichkeit und zerging zuletzt wie Dunst, wenn ich ohn' Maßen den Samen der Sterne fliegen sah über die Äcker der unergründlichen Tiefen.

Toujours quand j'étais fatigué de voir l'indicible folie dans le miroir de tant de figures humaines, je levais les yeux au-dessus des maisons et des arbres, jusqu'à vous, pensées éternelles du ciel. Et votre grandeur et votre liberté me délivraient toujours, et avec vous mes pensées partaient au-delà des pays et des mers et avec vous j'étais suspendu au-dessus de l'abîme de l'infinité, et finalement je me dissolvais en vapeur, quand je voyais la semence des étoiles voler sans mesure au-dessus des champs des profondeurs insondables.
