Leicht wie der Vogel im luftigen Raum,
Flögest du dort in der Wolke Saum,
Leben und Licht zu gewinnen!

  • sometimes misattributed to Christian Reinhold (1813 - 1856)
  • by Felix Reinhold Köstlin (1842 - 1867)

2. Traumleben  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: German (Deutsch)
Noch kaum erwacht [von]1 Träumen, --
Das Träumen kam von dir,--
Geh ich hier unter Bäumen,
Dein Bild geht neben mir.

Die Bäume dunkel schatten
Und wölben sich zum Dach;
Ein seliges Ermatten
Schleicht hier dem [Wandler]2 nach.

Wie neue Traumesdecke
Zieht's nun sich sanft um mich,
Und, wenn ich leis erschrecke,
So sprang ein Lied auf dich.

  • by Christian Reinhold (1813 - 1856), "Traumleben"

3. Ein Vöglein  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: German (Deutsch)
Ein Vögelein
Fliegt [über den]1 Rhein
Und wiegt die Flügel
Im Sonnenschein,
Sieht Rebenhügel
Und grüne Flut
In goldner Glut. --
Wie wohl das tut,
So hoch erhoben
Im Morgenhauch!
Beim [Vögelein]2 droben,
O wär' ich auch!

Confirmed with Gedichte von C. Reinhold, Stuttgart: C. Mäcken, Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1853, pages 65-66. Note: Lang set this text before the poem was published. She was using Köstlin’s poetry manuscript (Z 2722/8, poem 32, Deutsches Literaturarchiv, Marbach, Germany), which follows footnote 1 (i.e., it uses "über'n" instead of "über den").

Note: in Lang's song, line 3 word 2 ("wiegt") becomes "wieget" in the repetition.

1 Lang: "über'n"
2 Brahms: "Vöglein"
