Ich hatte dir so viel zu sagen,
Ich war zu lang im fremden Land,
Und doch warst du in all den Tagen
Die, die am besten mich verstand.

Nun da ich meine erste Gabe,
Die ich dir lange zugedacht,
In zagen Kinderhänden habe,
Hast du die Augen zugemacht.

Doch darf ich fühlen, wie beim Lesen
Mein Schmerz sich wunderlich vergißt,

So weiß im reichen Maienblust 
Die schmucken Bäume stehen, 
Es muß die ganze Blütenlust 
Im nächsten Wind verwehen. 

Auch deine jungen Tage, Kind, 
Und deine Lustgebärden, 
Sie müssen bald, so hold sie sind, 
Verblühn und dunkel werden. 

In Schmerzen nur und Dunkelheit 
Wird süße Frucht geboren. 
Doch ist sie reif, so war kein Leid 
Und war kein Weh verloren.

Vor den blanken Fenstern glühen
Blumen farbig in den Töpfen,
Hinterm Fenster dämmrig blühen
Mädchen mit gewundenen Zöpfen.

Überm Kirchdach schießen Schwalben
Schnell wie Blitze hin geschwungen,
Glocken rufen allenthalben,
Abend hat den Tag bezwungen.

Eh wir nun zu Bette gehen,
Mit dem Traum den Tag vertauschen,
Laß uns noch am Fenster stehen
Und dem großen Frieden lauschen.

Spät auf staubiger Straße geh ich,
Mauerschatten fallen schräg,
Und durch Rebenranken seh ich
Mondlicht über Bach und Weg.

Lieder, die ich einst gesungen,

Ungezählter Wanderungen
Schatten kreuzen meine Bahn.

Wind und Schnee und Sonnenhitze
Vieler Jahre klingt mir nach,

Schuh um Schuh im Finstern setz ich, 
Nacht umgibt mich sanft und groß,
An betauter Mauer netz ich
Hand und Stirn im feuchten Moos.

Dunkel gegen Luft und Sterne
Wiegt sich der Akazienbaum,
Lichter blitzen in der Ferne,
Doch die Nähe ahn ich kaum.

Liebe zieht am Zauberfaden
Alle Ferne mir ans Herz,
Pol-Stern rufen und Plejaden
Ihren Bruder himmelwärts.

Aller Welt bin ich verbunden,
Allem Leben aufgetan,
Habe neu die Bahn gefunden,
Die mich hält im Weltenplan.
