Mir träumte, ich war im Walde 
  Ein Baum von Blüthen schwer;
Da kam die schönste Jungfrau 
  Mit leichtem Schritt daher.

Sie trat zum Baum', und blickte 
  Ihn an, so wunderbar;
Da ließ ich ihr Blüthen regnen
  In's gold'ne Ringelhaar.

Und wie sie die Maid berührten, 
  Da waren die Blüthen alsbald 
Geworden zu Liebesliedern.
  Wie jauchzten sie durch den Wald! 

Ich aber, ich erwachte, 
  Und hörte ein Klingen so fern.
Ach! hätt' ich die Lieder behalten,
  Ich säng' sie ihr gar zu gern!

3. Songs no longer sounding

I dreamt that in the forest
  I was a tree laden with blossoms;
Along came the loveliest maiden
  With light steps.

She approached the tree and gazed
  Upon it so wondrously;
Thereupon I let blossoms rain down
  Into her curly, golden hair.

And as they touched the maiden
  The blossoms were immediately
Transformed into love songs.
  How they sounded rejoicingly through the forest!

But I, I awoke
  And heard a musical ringing so far away.
Ah! had I remembered the songs,
  I would so love to sing them to her!
