Ich seh dich weinen! ach! die Zähre
Schwamm auf des Auges Blau;
Und dieses Auge, dacht' ich, wäre
Ein Veilchen, naß vom Thau.
Ich sah dich lächeln; Saphirschimmer
Trat matt vor dir zurück,
Den regen Glanz erreicht' er nimmer,
Der strahlt aus deinem Blick.
Wie Wolken von der Sonn' empfangen
Ein tiefes mildes Licht,
Und kommt der Abend auch gegangen,
Ganz nimmt er's ihnen nicht:
So leihet seine eig'ne Wonne
Dieß Lächeln selbst dem Schmerz,
Ein Glühen bleibt von dieser Sonne,
Das süß durchströmt das Herz!

The weeping woman

I see you weeping! ah! the tear
Swam upon the blue of your eye;
And I thought that this eye was
A violet, wet with dew.
I saw you smiling, the gleam of sapphires
Receded weakly before you,
For it could never achieve the moving radiance
That beams forth from your gaze.
As clouds receive a deep, gentle light
From the sun,
And even though evening comes along,
It cannot take it from them:
Thus does this smile endow even pain
With its own bliss,
A glow from this sun remains
That sweetly flows through my heart!
