Nog in 't voorjaar van mijn leven Was ik, en ik ging op reis. 'k Ben voor 't dansen niet gebleven, Ik verliet mijn vaders huis. Al mijn have, heel mijn erfdeel, Wierp ik vrolijk over de heg, Met een staf als pelgrimszwerfsteel Trok ik, luchtig lachend, weg. Want mij trok een machtig hopen En een vaag orakelwoord, "Ga maar", zei 't, "de weg is open, Altijd hoger ga je voort. Tot je bij een gouden stadspoort Aanbelandt, daar moet je zijn, Want het aardse zal in dat oord Hemels, onvergank'lijk zijn." Avond werd 't en dan weer morgen, Nimmer, nimmer stond ik stil, Maar toch bleef nog steeds verborgen, Wat ik zoek en wat ik wil. Bergen vormden een blokkade, 'k Werd geremd door beek en boom, Over kloven bouwd' ik paden, Bruggen door de woeste stroom.
