Era la mia vita a primavera, quando cominciai a pellegrinare, e le liete danze di gioventù, le lasciai nella casa del padre. Tutta la mia eredità, i miei averi, li buttai via, felice della fede, e col leggero bastone da pellegrino me ne andai, innocente come un bimbo. Allora mi spingeva una forte speranza e un'oscura parola di fede, cammina, gridava, la via è aperta, sempre verso l'alto. Quando arrivi a un portone d'oro, entra, e tutto ciò che è terreno, là diventa eterno ed immortale. Venne sera e venne giorno, non mi sono mai fermato; ma sempre rimaneva nascosto ciò che cerco, ciò che voglio. Montagne stavano sul mio cammino, acque impetuose impedivano il mio passo, sugli abissi ho costruito passaggi, ponti sui fiumi nemici.
