Abendlich schon rauscht der Wald
Aus den tiefsten Gründen,
Droben wird der Herr nun bald
Die Stern' anzünden,
Wie so stille in den Schlünden,
Abendlich nur rauscht der Wald.
Alles geht zu seiner Ruh,
Wald und Welt versausen,
Schauernd hört der Wandrer zu,
Sehnt sich wohl nach Hause,
Hier in Waldes stiller Klause
Herz, geh' endlich du auch zur Ruh!
Composition:
Set to music by Robert Franz (1815 - 1892), "Abends", op. 16 no. 4, published 1852 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Whistling

In the evening the forest already murmurs
From the depths of the land.
Above, the Lord will now soon
Set fire to the stars.
How quietly in the abysses,
In the evening the forest only murmurs.
All goes towards its rest,
Forest and world cease their bustle;
Trembling, the wanderer listens,
Yearning deeply for home.
Here in the forest’s still cloister,
Heart, go also at last to rest.
