Abendlich [schon]¹ rauscht der Wald
Aus den [tiefsten]² Gründen,
Droben wird der Herr nun bald
[An die Sternlein zünden]³,
Wie so stille in den Schlünden,
Abendlich nur rauscht der Wald.

Alles geht zu seiner Ruh,
[Wald und Welt versausen]⁴,
Schauernd hört der Wandrer zu,
Sehnt sich [recht]⁵ nach Hause,
Hier in Waldes [grüner]⁶ Klause
Herz, geh' [endlich auch]⁷ zur Ruh!

Allumer les étoiles.
Quel silence dans les profondeurs !
Seulement le soir murmure la forêt.
 
Toute chose s'en va vers son repos.
La forêt et le monde s'évanouissent,
Tout tremblant, le voyageur solitaire tend l'oreille,
Il se languit de sa maison.
Ici, dans le calme hermitage de la forêt,
Oh mon coeur, toi aussi, vas vers ton repos.
