So still ist's auf der Welt;
Wer weiß, die Lieder dringen
Vielleicht zum Sternezelt.
Wer weiß, die da gestorben,
Sie hören droben mich
Und öffnen leis' die Pforten
Und nehmen uns zu sich.

Toi, cher, fidèle luth,
Combien de nuits d'été,
Jusqu'au lever du matin,
Ai-je veillé avec toi !
A nouveau les vallées s'assombrissent,
Déjà s'éteint le rougeoiement du soir,
Pourtant ceux qui d'habitude veillaient avec nous
Sont morts depuis longtemps.
Qu'allons-nous maintenant chanter
Ici dans la solitude,
Quand s'en sont allés tous ceux d'entre nous
Que nos chants réjouissaient ?
Et pourtant nous voulons chanter !
Le monde est si silencieux ;
Qui sait, les chants perceront
Peut-être la tente des étoiles.
Qui sait, ceux qui là sont morts,
Ceux là m'entendent de là-haut
Et doucement ouvrent les portes
Pour nous compter parmi eux.
