[Mit Myrten und Rosen, lieblich und hold, mit duft'gen Zypressen und Flittergold, möcht' ich zieren dieß Buch wie 'nen Totenschrein]1, Und sargen meine Lieder hinein. O könnt' ich die Liebe sargen hinzu! [Auf dem]2 Grabe der Liebe wächst Blümlein der Ruh', da blüht es hervor, da pflückt man es ab, - doch mir blüht's nur, wenn ich selber im Grab. Hier sind nun die Lieder, die einst so wild, wie ein Lavastrom, der dem Ätna entquillt, Hervorgestürtzt aus dem tiefsten Gemüt, und rings viel blitzende Funken versprüht! Nun liegen sie stumm und totengleich, nun starren sie kalt und nebelbleich, doch aufs neu die alte Glut sie belebt, wenn der Liebe Geist einst über sie schwebt. Und es wird mir im Herzen viel Ahnung laut: der Liebe Geist einst über sie taut; einst kommt dies Buch in deine Hand, du süßes Lieb im fernen Land. Dann löst sich des Liedes Zauberbann, die blaßen Buchstaben schaun dich an, sie schauen dir flehend ins schöne Aug', und flüstern mit Wehmut und Liebeshauch.

Amb murtres i roses, gentils i encisadores, amb flairosos xiprers i oripell, voldria ornar aquest llibre com un sarcòfag i enterrar a dins les meves cançons. Oh, si a més, hi pogués enterrar l’amor! Al sepulcre de l’amor creix la petita flor del repòs, allà hi floreix i allà hom la cull, -- però per a mi sols florirà quan jo estigui a la tomba. Ara estan aquí les cançons, abans tan salvatges, com un doll de lava sorgint de l’Etna, sostretes del fons de l’ànima, arrosades a l’entorn de moltes espurnes llampegants! Adés resten mudes i com mortes, amb un esguard fred, pàl·lid, boirós, però llur vell caliu es revifarà quan un dia l’esperit de l’amor planarà damunt seu. I un pressentiment parla fort al meu cor: l’esperit de l’amor un dia les desglaçarà, algun dia aquest llibre caurà a les teves mans, tu dolça estimada en terra llunyana. Llavors es desfermarà l’encanteri de les cançons, les pàl·lides lletres et miraran, et miraran suplicant als teus bonics ulls, xiuxiuejant amb tristor i amorós alè.
