Flow, murmuring Afton, along the hills; Flow quietly and harken to the lovely singing! My Mary is sleeping under the apple tree: Flow quietly and do not disturb her in her dreams! Wood-dove, who coos in the forest, You blackbirds, who whirr through the thorns; Green-crested plover, whither do you flit? I beg you, do not disturb the sleeping one! Oh Afton, how bright are the hills Through which your playful waves run! Here, leaning upon my staff, I gaze Down upon Mary’s cottage and the flock. How scented are your shores in the green valley, Where the golden primulas bloom merrily! We sat there in the shadow of the birches, And exchanged many an intimate word. You leap about the cottage where Mary dwells, You nestle up to her feet, richly rewarded! Is it not true, my brooklet, that you are delighted When the lovely one picks the flowers that frame you? - Flow, murmuring Afton, along the hills; Flow quietly, oh brooklet, and harken to the singing! My Mary is sleeping under the apple tree: Flow quietly and do not disturb her in her dreams!
