As every blossom wilts and every youthfulness Gives way to age, every stage of life blooms, Every wisdom, too, and every virtue At their appropriate time and cannot last forever. At every call from life, the heart must be Ready for farewell and new beginnings, In order to offer itself to other, new commitments With valour and without mourning. And in every beginning there lives a magic That protects us and helps us to live. We are to stride blithely through expanse after expanse, And to set our hearts upon none of them as a homeland; The spirit of the world does not wish to fetter and confine us, It wishes to lift us step by step, expand our horizons. Just when we are feeling at home in a circle of life And cosily accustomed, then slackness threatens; Only he who is ready for departure and travel May tear himself away from paralysing familiarity. Even our hour of death may possibly send us, Made young, toward new expanses, Life’s call to us shall never end... So, my heart, take farewell then and heal!
