Wohin? ...Wohin? -- Ich saß beim Mahl,
Erdmännlein [durchlärmten den]1 Hochzeitssaal,
sie brachten mir ein Becherlein,
darinnen glühte Blut, statt Wein:
den Becher musst' ich trinken.

Und als ich getrunken den Hochzeitstrank,
da ward mir so enge die Brust, so bang,
da [griff]2 hinein eine eiserne Hand --
da ward mir das ganze Herze verbrannt.
[Das Herze muss ich kühlen!]3

Ein Krönlein lag auf dem Hochzeitstisch --
zwischen roten Korallen ein Silberfisch --
das zog ich heran, das setzt' ich mir auf;
nun bin ich des [Wassermannes]4 Braut.
Mein Herze musst' ich kühlen...

Es fielen drei Äpfel in meinen Schoß,
weiß, gold und rosenrot -- :
das war die Hochzeitsgabe.
Ich aß den weißen und wurde bleich,
ich aß den gold'nen und wurde reich,
zuletzt den rosenroten.

Weiß, bleich und rosenrot 
saß ein [Mägdlein]5 -- und das war tot.
Wassermann! [thu nun]6 auf die Thür!
Die tote Braut, die bring' ich dir.
[Zwischen]7 Silberfischlein, Molch und Gestein
ins [Tiefe, Dunkle]8, Kühle hinein...
O, du verbranntes Herze!

Dwarf brownies frisk'd through the nuptial hall,
they offered me a goblet fine,
therein was glowing blood, not wine;
that goblet, I must drink it.

And when I had drunk that wedding drink,
I felt my heart with an anguish shrink,
I felt the grip of an iron hand,
then grew my inmost heart one brand.
My poor heart craved for cooling!

On the nuptial board lay a coronet,
A silver fish amid corals red.
I drew it to me, that crownet I tried;
now am I the watersprite's bride.
My scorched heart wanted cooling.

There dropped three apples upon my lap,
white, gold and rosy-red;
they were a fatal bridewain.
I ate the white one, and pale I turned,
I ate the gold one, and riches earned,
at last the rose-red apple.

White, pale and rosy-red 
sate a maiden fair, and she was dead.
Watersprite, ope thy door to me!
The lifeless bride I bring to thee.
Among silver fishes, lizards and stone
in deepness, darkness, cooling alone.
O woe, thou charred heart!
