Das Mädchen: Im Sommer ist gut lustig sein Auf hohen wilden Heiden, Dort findet man grün Plätzelein, Mein herzverliebtes Schätzelein, Von dir mag ich nit scheiden. Der Gefangene: Und sperrt man mich ein Im finstern Kerker, Dies alles sind nur Vergebliche Werke; Denn meine Gedanken Zerreißen die Schranken Und Mauern entzwei, Die Gedanken sind frei. Das Mädchen: Im Sommer ist gut lustig sein Auf hohen wilden Bergen; Man ist da ewig ganz allein, Man hört da gar kein Kindergeschrei, Die Luft mag einem da werden. Der Gefangene: So sei es, wie es will, Und wenn es sich schicket, [Nur alles in der Still]1; Und was mich erquicket, Mein Wunsch und Begehren Niemand kann's [mir]2 wehren; Es bleibet dabei, Die Gedanken sind frei. El presoner: Els pensaments són lliures, qui els pot endevinar? Ells passen de pressa com ombres nocturnes. Ningú els pot conèixer, cap caçador els pot disparar; car això resta així, els pensaments són lliures. La donzella: A l’estiu fa bé d’estar alegre a les prades altes i feréstegues, allà hom troba petits indrets de verdor, petit tresor estimat del cor, no em vull separar de tu. El presoner: I encara que em tanquin en un fosc calabós, tot això serà una feina inútil, car els meus pensaments trenquen les barreres i esquincen els murs, els pensaments són lliures. La donzella: A l’estiu fa bé d’estar alegre a les altes muntanyes salvatges; allà hom està sempre sol, no se sent cridar els infants, i l’aire és tant estimulant. El presoner: Que sigui el que vulgui, i quan això s’esdevingui, que tot sigui en silenci; i el que em reanima, els meus anhels i desitjos, ningú els pot reprimir; car això resta així, els pensaments són lliures. La donzella: Tresor meu, tu cantes tan alegre com els ocellets a la prada; jo estic tan trista a la porta de la presó, tant de bo estigués morta o pogués estar amb tu, ai, per què sempre m’haig de plànyer? El presoner: I perquè tant et planys, jo renunciaré a l’amor, i si goso fer-ho, llavors res em turmentarà! Així, dins del meu cor, podré sempre riure i plaguejar; car això resta així, els pensaments són lliures.
