Das Mädchen: Im Sommer ist gut lustig sein Auf hohen wilden Heiden, Dort findet man grün Plätzelein, Mein herzverliebtes Schätzelein, Von dir mag ich nit scheiden. Der Gefangene: Und sperrt man mich ein Im finstern Kerker, Dies alles sind nur Vergebliche Werke; Denn meine Gedanken Zerreißen die Schranken Und Mauern entzwei, Die Gedanken sind frei. Das Mädchen: Im Sommer ist gut lustig sein Auf hohen wilden Bergen; Man ist da ewig ganz allein, Man hört da gar kein Kindergeschrei, Die Luft mag einem da werden. Der Gefangene: So sei es, wie es will, Und wenn es sich schicket, [Nur alles in der Still]1; Und was mich erquicket, Mein Wunsch und Begehren Niemand kann's [mir]2 wehren; Es bleibet dabei, Die Gedanken sind frei. Le prisonnier : Les pensées sont libres, qui peut les deviner ? Elles passent vite comme les ombres nocturnes. Personne ne les connaît, aucun chasseur ne les tirera ; car il en est ainsi : les pensées sont libres. La jeune fille : En été il est bon d'être heureux dans les landes hautes et sauvages, où on trouve un petit espace vert, mon trésor bien-aimé, je ne veux pas être séparée de toi. Le prisonnier : Et si on m'enferme dans un sombre cachot, ce sera tout à fait en vain qu'ils essaieront. Car mes pensées détruisent les barrières et brisent les murs : les pensées sont libres. La jeune fille : En été il est bon d'être heureux dans les montagnes hautes et sauvages ; on est toujours seul là-haut ; on entend aucun enfant crier, et l'air est si vous transporte ! Le prisonnier : Qu'il en soit, comme c'est décidé, et si cela arrive que cela soit en silence ; Et ce qui réjouit mon cœur, mes souhaits et mes désirs personne ne peut les retenir ; car il en est ainsi : les pensées sont libres ! La jeune fille : Mon trésor, tu chantes si gaiement comme si tu étais un petit oiseau dans l'herbe ; et je me tiens si tristement près de la porte du cachot, si seulement j'étais morte, ou si j'étais près de toi, Ah, dois-je toujours me lamenter ? Le prisonnier : Et parce que tu te lamentes ainsi, je renoncerai à l'amour, et si j'ose le faire, alors rien ne me tourmentera. Aussi dans mon cœur je pourrai toujours rire et plaisanter, car il en est ainsi : les pensées sont libres !
