Wer öffnet leise [Schloß und Thür]1? Wer schleicht in's haus herein? Es ist der Sohn, der wiederkehrt Zum tauben Mütterlein. Er tritt hinein! sie hört ihn nicht, Sie saß am Herd und spann; Da tritt er grüßend vor sie hin, Und spricht sie: Mutter, an. Und wie er spricht, so blickt sie auf, Und - wundervoll Geschick - Sie ist nicht taub dem milden Wort, Sie hört ihn mit dem Blick! Sie thut die Arme weit ihm auf, Und er drückt sich hinein, Da hörte seines Herzens Schlag Das taube Mütterlein. Und wie sie [nun]2 beim Sohne sitzt So selig, so verklärt - Ich wette, daß taub Mütterlein Die Englein singen hört.
