Diese Damen, sie verstehen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Diese Damen, sie verstehen,
Wie man Dichter ehren muß:
Gaben mir ein Mittagessen,
Mir und meinem Genius.

Ach! die Suppe war vortrefflich,
Und der Wein hat mich erquickt,
Das Geflügel, das war göttlich,
Und der Hase war gespickt.

Sprachen, glaub ich, von der Dichtkunst,
Und ich wurde endlich satt;
Und ich dankte für die Ehre,
Die man mir erwiesen hat.

These gentlewomen, they understand
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
These gentlewomen, they understand
How one should honour poets:
They gave me a luncheon,
Me and my genius.

Ah! The soup was superb,
And the wine refreshed me,
The poultry was divine,
And the rabbit was larded.

I believe we spoke about poetry,
And finally [for a change] I was replete;
And I expressed my thanks for the honour
That was shown to me.
