Gefrorne Tropfen fallen
Von meinen Wangen ab:
[Und ist's]1 mir denn entgangen,
Daß ich geweinet hab'?

Ei Thränen, meine Thränen,
Und seid ihr gar so lau,
Daß ihr erstarrt zu Eise,
Wie kühler Morgenthau?

[Und]2 dringt doch aus der Quelle
Der Brust so glühend heiß,
Als wolltet ihr zerschmelzen
Des ganzen Winters Eis.

Frozen tears
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Here rolling down my cheeks are
My frozen, frozen tears
How can I not have ever known
Have cried and never heard? (2)

Oh, sorrow, cold teardrops --
You've sprung without my warmth-
And you freeze on my face --
Like coldest morning dew !

And yet you rise from deep in my breast -
That's burning, blazing hot.
Distraught and desperate for life and love --
To melt all the winter's ice. (2)
