Sommarnatten

På den lugna skogssjöns vatten
Satt jag hela sommarnatten,
Och för böljans tropp, ur båten,
Slängde tanklös ut försåten.
Men en talltrast sjöng på stranden,
Att han kunnat mista anden,
Tills jag halvt förtörnad sade:
"Bättre, om din näbb du lade
Under vingen, och till dagen
Sparde tonerna och slagen."
Men den djärve hördes svara:
"Gosse, låt ditt metspö vara.
Såg du opp kring land och vatten,
Kanske sjöng du själv om natten."
Och jag lyfte opp mitt öga,
Ljus var jorden, ljust det höga,
Och från himlen, stranden, vågen
Kom min flicka mig i hågen.
Och, som fågeln spått i lunden,
Sjöng jag denna sång på stunden.

Nuit d'été

Sur l'eau tranquille du lac de la forêt
J'étais assis toute la nuit d'été
Et, dans les vagues, du bateau
Je posais mes pièges, sans penser.
Mais une grive chanta sur la rive du lac
Comme si son esprit était perdu ;
Jusqu'à ce que, à moitié en colère, je dis :
"Ce serait mieux si tu mettais ton bec
Sous ton aile, et économisais pour la journée
Ta musique et ton gazouillis."
Mais l'oiseau effronté répondit :
"Garçon, ce serait mieux si tu mettais ta canne de côté.
Si tu regardais autour, la terre et l'eau,
Peut-être que tu chanterais aussi la nuit."
Et je levais les yeux,
Brillante était la terre, brillant était le ciel,
Et du paradis, de la rive, de l'onde
Mon amie vint dans mon esprit.
