In des Todes Feierstunde1 Senke, heilige Kamöne, Noch einmal die stillen Lieder, Noch einmal die [süßen]2 Töne Auf die tiefe Abschiedswunde Meines Busens heilend nieder, Hebe aus [den]3 ird'schen Ringen Die bedrängte reine Seele, Trage sie auf deinen Schwingen: Daß sie sich dem Licht vermähle. - O da werden mich die Klänge [Traut]4 und wonnevoll umwehen, Und die Ketten, die ich sprenge, Werden still und leicht vergehen. Alles Große werd' ich sehen, Das im Leben mich beglückte, Alles Schöne, das mir blühte, Wird verherrlicht vor mir stehen. Jeden Stern, der mir erglühte, Der mit freundlichem Gefunkel Durch das [hoffnungslose]5 Dunkel Meines kurzen Weges blickte, Jede Blume, die ihn schmückte, Werden mir die Töne bringen; Und die schrecklichen Minuten, Wo ich schmerzlich könnte bluten, Werden mich mit Lust umklingen; Und Verklärung werd' ich sehen Ausgegossen über allen Dingen. In de hoge stervensstonde, Als ik eens van hier moet scheiden En mijn laatste strijd moet lijden, Laat dan, muze, heil'ge schone, Nog eenmaal je liedvocalen, Nog eenmaal je zuivere tonen Op de diepe afscheidswonde Van mijn hart genezend dalen. Uit het knellend' aardse kluwen Til mijn ziel, bevrijd van teugels, Draag haar weg op sterke vleugels, Dat zij met het licht kan huwen. Klanken zullen als een deken Zoet en zalig mij omwinden, En de ketens, die 'k zal breken, Zullen stil en licht ontbinden. Al het grote zal 'k aanschouwen Dat in 't leven mij verrukte, Al het mooie dat er bloeide Zal zich heerlijk mij ontvouwen. Elke ster die voor mij gloeide, Door welks vriend'lijke geflonker In het angstaanjagend donker 't Mij mijn pad te vinden lukte, Elke bloem die 't pad opsmukte, Zullen mij die tonen brengen. En de wrede laatste stonde, - Bloeden kan 'k uit zere wonden -, Zal mij met genot omzingen. Helend licht zal ik zien schijnen, Uitgegoten over alle dingen. Zo in weelde zal ik dan verdwijnen, Zacht door golven van geluk verslonden.
