The winter sings -- it halloos, It sings a lullaby to the furry forest With a hundred chimes of pines. All around, in deep melancholy, Float towards a country far away The grey clouds. And in the yard a little storm Spreads a silken cover, But oh such cold! Little playful sparrows, Like orphaned children, Press against the window. The little birds are freezing, Hungry, tired, And huddle close together. And the blizzard furiously howling Bangs on the closed shutters And roars ever more strongly. But the tender little birds are slumbering, Beneath this snowy whirlwind, Beside the frozen window. And they're having a wonderful dream Of the sun brightly shining On the lovely lady, Spring.
