Schwarzschattende Kastanie,
Mein windgeregtes Sommerzelt,
Du senkst zur Flut dein weit Geäst,
Dein Laub, es durstet und es trinkt,
Schwarzschattende Kastanie!
Im Porte badet junge Brut
Mit Hader oder Lustgeschrei,
Und Kinder schwimmen leuchtend weiß
Im Gitter deines Blätterwerks,
Schwarzschattende Kastanie!
Und dämmern See und Ufer ein
Und rauscht vorbei das Abendboot,
So zuckt aus roter Schiffslatern'
Ein Blitz und wandert auf dem Schwung
Der Flut, gebrochen Lettern gleich,
Bis unter deinem Laub erlischt
Die rätselhafte Flammenschrift,
Schwarzschattende Kastanie!

Châtaignier à l'ombre noire

Châtaignier à l'ombre noire,
Ma tente d'été agitée par le vent,
Tu abaisses vers les flots tes larges branches,
Ton feuillage est assoiffé et boit,
Châtaignier à l'ombre noire !
Une jeune couvée se baigne sous  son abri
Avec des cris de chamaillerie ou de plaisir,
Et des enfants nagent, blancs, lumineux,
Dans le réseau de tes frondaisons,
Châtaignier à l'ombre noire !
Et quand tombe le crépuscule sur le lac et la rive
Et que le bateau du soir passe en trombe,
De son rouge feu de position tressaille
Un éclair qui flotte sur les mouvements
Du flot, comme des lettres brisées,
Jusqu'à ce que sous ton feuillage s'éteigne
L'énigmatique écrit de feu,
Châtaignier à l'ombre noire !
