"O du Mädchen, meine Seele!
Willst du wol mein Liebchen sein?" --

"Sprich nicht thöricht, junger Knabe!
Nichts davon kann je geschehen,
Lieber wollt' ich in der Schänke
Mich in goldnen Krug verwandeln,
Lieber als dein Liebchen sein!" --

"Und ich bin der junge Schänkwirth,
Und so bist du dennoch mein!" --

"Sprich nicht thöricht, junger Knabe!
Nichts davon kann je geschehen,
Lieber wollt' im Kaffeehause
In 'ne Schal' ich mich verwandeln,
Lieber als dein Liebchen sein!" --

"Und ich bin der Kaffeesieder,
Und so bist du dennoch mein!"

"Sprich nicht thöricht, junger Knabe!
Nichts davon kann je geschehen,
Lieber wollt' ich auf dem Felde
In 'ne Wachtel mich verwandeln,
Lieber als dein Liebchen sein!" --

"Und ich bin der rüst'ge Jäger,
Und so bist du dennoch mein!" --

"Sprich nicht thöricht, junger Knabe!
Nichts davon kann je geschehen,
Lieber wollt' ich tief im Meere
Mich in einen Fische verwandeln,
Lieber als dein Liebchen sein!" --

"Und ich bin ein feines Netzlein,
Und so bist du dennoch mein.
Sei's auf dies', auf jenem Wege,
Bist die Meine allerwege;
Sei es hier oder sei es dorten,
Bist die Meine aller Orten!"

The unavoidable one
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Oh you maiden, my very soul!
Would you not like to be my love?" --

"Don't talk nonsense, young lad!
Nothing like that can ever happen,
I would rather go into the tavern
And turn into a golden jug,
Rather that, than become your love!"--

"And I would be the young bartender,
And so you would be mine after all!" --

"Don't talk nonsense, young lad!
Nothing like that can ever happen,
I would rather go into the coffeehouse
And turn into a bowl,
Rather that, than become your love!"--

"And I would be the barista,
And so you would be mine after all!" --

"Don't talk nonsense, young lad!
Nothing like that can ever happen,
I would rather, out on the fields,
Turn myself into a quail,
Rather that, than become your love!"--

"And I would be the hale hunter,
And so you would be mine after all!" --

"Don't talk nonsense, young lad!
Nothing like that can ever happen,
I would rather, deep within the ocean,
Turn myself into a fish,
Rather that, than become your love!"--

"And I would be a finely-woven net,
And so you would be mine after all.
Be it in this manner, be it in that manner,
You are always mine;
Be it here or be it there,
You are mine everywhere!"
