Vorfrühling seufzt in weiter Nacht,
daß mir das Herze brechen will;
die Lande ruhn so menschenstill,
nur ich bin aufgewacht.
Oh horch, nun bricht des Eises Wall
auf allen Strömen, allen Seen;
mir ist, ich müßte mit vergehn
und, Woge, wieder auferstehn
zu neuem Klippenfall.
Die Lande ruhn so menschenstill;
nur hier und dort ist wer erwacht,
und seine Seele weint und lacht,
wie es der Tauwind will.

Le printemps soupire tant dans la vaste nuit,
qu'il va me briser le cœur ;
les terres reposent dans le silence des hommes,
seul moi suis éveillé.
Oh, écoute, la couche de glace se brise
sur tous les fleuves, sur tous les lacs ;
pour moi c'est comme si je devais disparaître avec eux
et, vague, ressusciter
pour tomber encore sur un écueil.
Les terres reposent dans le silence des hommes,
seul ici et là quelqu'un est éveillé,
et son âme pleure et rit
comme le veut le vent du dégel.
