Wenn zum Tanz die jungen Schönen Sich im Mondenscheine drehn, Kann doch keine sich so lieblich Und so leicht wie meine drehn! Daß die kurzen Röcke flattern, Und darunter, rot bekleidet, Leuchtend wie zwei Feuersäulen Sich die schlanken Beine drehn! Selbst die Weisen aus der Schenke Bleiben stehn vor Lust und Staunen, Wenn sie, spät nach Hause schwankend, Sich berauscht vom Weine drehn! Auch der Muschtahid1, der fromme, Mit den kurzen Säbelbeinen, Spricht: So lieblich wie Hafisa Kann im Tanz sich keine drehn! Ja, vor dieser Anmut Zauber, Vor Hafisas Tanzesreigen Wird sich noch berauscht die ganze Gläubige Gemeine drehn! Und was in der Welt getrennt lebt Durch verjährten Sektenhader, Wird sich hier versöhnt mit uns in Liebendem Vereine drehn! Oh, Mirza-Schaffy! welch Schauspiel, Wenn die alten Kirchensäulen Selber wanken und sich taumelnd Um Hafisas Beine drehn!

When the young beauties in the dance Twirl about in the moonlight, None of them twirls so beautifully And so lightly as my [beautiful one]! That the short skirts flutter, And beneath, clad in red, Glowing like two columns of fire, The slender legs twirl! Even the sages from the tavern Stop and stand for rapture and wonder, When they themselves, tottering home late at night, Twirl intoxicated from wine-drinking! Even Mushtahid, the pious, With the short sabre-like legs, Says: No one can twirl in the dance As beautifully as Hafisa. Yes, before the magic of this gracefulness Before Hafisa's round-dance The entire community of the faithful will yet Twirl in raptures! And what lives apart in the world Because of ancient disputes between sects, Shall, reconciled, here with us Twirl in loving unity! Oh, Mirza-Schaffy! What a spectacle, When the old church pillars Themselves shall totter and, swaying, Twirl about Hafisa's legs!
