En un roser al jardí brostava una petita poncella, i tothom que la veia, a penes podia esperar que la rosa florís. L’escarabat daurat arribà volant, bugonà al seu voltant en cercles: petita rosa, quan floriràs? De bon matí brillava clara la rosada damunt la jove poncella, el senyor rossinyol passà revista al roser per veure si havia brostat a la nit. Es posà damunt una branca verda i cantà una encisadora, dolça tonada: petita rosa, quan floriràs? Arribà també una donzella rossa per veure si el capoll de rosa, en la càlida llum del sol, el trobaria ja desclòs. Amb els seus llavis vermells àdhuc el besà: petita rosa, quan floriràs? Al dia següent, amb un lleial esperit un noble jovencell l’arrancà i el portà a l’estimada donzella com a nova ofrena matinal. La petita rosa i el qui l’havia agafat foren benvinguts allà, petita rosa, quan floriràs?
