Der var Roser i Dale

Der var Roser i Dale,
Og Violer bag Hæk;
I de løvrige Sale
Var der kvidren og Tale
Af Fugl og af Bæk.

Som den smidigste Slange
Gik de Bølger i Bugt;
Og det svæved som Sange
Over Haver og Vange
  Fra Blomst og fra Frugt.

Der var Ranker, som binder
Til Himlen vor Jord;
Der var blussende Kinder,
Der var dejlige kvinder
  I Sal og ved Bord! --

Men af Alt, hvad jeg hørte,
Og af Alt, hvad jeg så,
Var der Intet mig rørte,
Mig min Tanke did førte,
Hvor jeg selv ej kan nåe!

Il y avait des roses dans le vallon

Il y avait des vrilles
Qui de la terre s'attachaient au ciel ;

Il y avait des femmes ravissantes
Attablées dans la salle !
