Nun steigt der Rebenblüthe Duft
Von allen Hügeln nieder.
Nun rauschen durch die blaue Luft
Die goldnen Klänge wieder;
Die Klänge aus der schönen Zeit --
Das ist ein Weh und Herzeleid,
Daß ich nun ferne bin!

O schöner Strom, o blüh'ndes Thal,
Du wandernde Frühlingssonne,
Gieb mir nur noch ein Einzigmal
Den Becher jener Wonne!
Die ganze Seele dürstet hier,
Und jede Stunde kündet mir,
Daß ich nun ferne bin!

Ihn schläfert; mit weißer Decke
Umhüllen ihn Eis und Schnee.

Er träumt von einer Palme,
Die fern im Morgenland,

Auf brennender Felsenwand.

Im Arm des holden Kindes
Ruh' ich allein am Strand;
"Was horchst du beim Rauschen des Windes?
Was zuckt deine weiße Hand?"

""Das ist kein Rauschen des Windes,
Das ist der Seejungfern [Gesang]3,
Und meine Schwestern sind es,
Die einst das Meer verschlang.""
