Ich bin auch in Ravenna gewesen,
Ist eine kleine, tote Stadt,
Die Kirchen und viel Ruinen hat,
Man kann davon in den Büchern lesen.

Du gehst hindurch und schaust dich um,
Die Straßen sind so trüb und naß
Und sind so tausendjährig stumm,
Und überall wächst Moos und Gras!

Das ist wie alte Lieder sind,
Man hört sie an und keiner lacht
Ein jeder lauscht und jeder sinnt
Hernach daran bis in die Nacht.

Über mir im Blauen reisen
Wolken, die mich heimwärts weisen.

Heimwärts in die namenlose Ferne,
In das Land des Friedens und der Sterne.

Heimat! Soll ich deine blauen
Schönen Ufer niemals schauen?

Dennoch ist mir, hier im Süden müßten
Nah sein und erreichbar deine Küsten.

Wieder schreitet er den braunen Pfad
Von den stürmeklaren Berge nieder,
Wieder quellen, wo der Schöne naht,
Liebe Blumen auf und Vogellieder.

Wieder auch verführt er meinen Sinn,
Daß in dieser zart erblühten Reine
Mir die Erde, deren Gast ich bin,
Eigentum und holde Heimat scheine.

Falter vom Wind geweht,
Ein perlmutterner Schauer,
Glitzert, flimmert, vergeht.
So mit Augenblicksblinken,
So im Vorüberwehn
Sah ich das Glück mir winken,
Glitzern, flimmern, vergehn.

Schuh um Schuh im Finstern setz ich, 
Nacht umgibt mich sanft und groß,
An betauter Mauer netz ich
Hand und Stirn im feuchten Moos.

Dunkel gegen Luft und Sterne
Wiegt sich der Akazienbaum,
Lichter blitzen in der Ferne,
Doch die Nähe ahn ich kaum.

Liebe zieht am Zauberfaden
Alle Ferne mir ans Herz,
Pol-Stern rufen und Plejaden
Ihren Bruder himmelwärts.

Aller Welt bin ich verbunden,
Allem Leben aufgetan,
Habe neu die Bahn gefunden,
Die mich hält im Weltenplan.

Uns ist kein Sein vergönnt. Wir sind nur Strom,
Wir fließen willig allen Formen ein:
Dem Tag, der Nacht, der Höhle und dem Dom,
Wir gehn hindurch, uns treibt der Durst nach Sein.

So füllen Form um Form wir ohne Rast,
Und keine wird zur Heimat uns, zum Glück, zur Not,
Stets sind wir unterwegs, stets sind wir Gast,
Uns ruft nicht Feld noch Pflug, uns wächst kein Brot.

Wir wissen nicht, wie Gott es mit uns meint,
Er spielt mit uns, dem Ton in seiner Hand,
Der stumm und bildsam ist, nicht lacht noch weint,
Der wohl geknetet wird, doch nie gebrannt.

Einmal zu Stein erstarren! Einmal dauern!
Danach ist unsre Sehnsucht ewig rege,
Und bleibt doch ewig nur ein banges Schauern,
Und wird doch nie zur Rast auf unsrem Wege.

Sind wir bereit in Ehrfurcht anzuhören,
Zu reiner Feier die verehrten Geister
Begnadeter Zeiten zu beschwören.
 
Wir lassen vom Geheimnis uns erheben
Der magischen Formelschrift, in deren Bann
Das Uferlose, Stürmende, das Leben
Zu klaren Gleichnissen gerann.
 
Sternbildern gleich ertönen sie kristallen,
In ihrem Dienst ward unserm Leben Sinn,
Und keiner kann aus ihren Kreisen fallen
Als nach der heiligen Mitte hin.
