Sie rührt dir an Knöchel und Schläfe, sie weckt dich zu Leben und Schlaf, sie spürt dich im Wort auf, im Wunsch, im Gedanken, sie schläft bei jedem von ihnen, sie lockt dich hervor. Sie kämmt dir das Salz aus den Wimpern und tischt es dir auf, sie lauscht deinen Stunden den Sand ab und setzt ihn dir vor. Und was sie als Rose war, Schatten und Wasser, schenkt sie dir ein.

Halbe Nacht. Mit den Dolchen des Traumes geheftet in sprühende Augen. Schrei nicht vor Schmerz: wie Tücher flattern die Wolken. Ein seidener Teppich, so ward sie gespannt zwischen uns, daß getanzt sei von Dunkel zu Dunkel. Die schwarze Flöte schnitzten sie uns aus lebendigem Holz, und die Tänzerin kommt nun. Aus Meerschaum gesponnene Finger taucht sie ins Aug uns: eines will hier noch weinen? Keines. So wirbelt sie selig dahin, und die feurige Pauke wird laut. Ringe wirft sie uns zu, wir fangen sie auf mit den Dolchen. Vermählt sie uns so? Wie Scherben erklingts, und ich weiß es nun wieder: du starbst nicht den malvenfarbenen Tod.
