Der müde Sommer senkt das Haupt
Und schaut sein falbes Bild im See.
Ich wandle müde und bestaubt
Im Schatten der Allee.

Durch Pappeln geht ein zager Wind,
Der Himmel hinter mir ist rot,
Und vor mir Abendängste sind
- Und Dämmerung - und Tod.

Ich wandle müde und bestaubt,
Und hinter mir bleibt zögernd stehn
Die Jugend, neigt das schöne Haupt
Und will nicht fürder mit mir gehn.

Mitternacht schlägt eine Uhr im Tal,
Mond am Himmel wandert kalt und kahl.

Unterwegs im Schnee und Mondenschein
Geh mit meinem Schatten ich allein.

Wieviel Wege ging ich frühlingsgrün,
Wieviel Sommersonnen sah ich glühn!

Müde ist mein Schritt und grau mein Haar,
Niemand kennt mich mehr, wie einst ich war.

Müde bleibt mein dürrer Schatten stehn -
Einmal muß die Fahrt zu Ende gehn.

Traum, der durch die bunte Welt mich zog,
Weicht von mir. Ich weiß nun, daß er log.

Eine Uhr im Tal schlägt Mitternacht,
O wie kalt der Mond dort oben lacht!

Schnee, wie kühl umfängst du Stirn und Brust!
Holder ist der Tod, als ich gewußt.

Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!
Einsam ist jeder Busch und Stein,
Kein Baum sieht den andern,
Jeder ist allein.

Voll Freunden war mir die Welt,
Als noch mein Leben licht war;
Nun, da der Nebel fällt,
Ist keiner mehr sichtbar.

Wahrlich, keiner ist weise,
Der nicht das Dunkel kennt,
Das [unentrinnbar]¹ und leise
Von allen ihn trennt.

Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!

Wolkenflug und herber Wind
Kühlt mich, der ich krank gewesen.
Träumend wie ein stilles Kind
Ruh ich aus und bin genesen.

Nur ein Klang in tiefer Brust
Ist von meinem armen Lieben,
Dämpfend alle laute Lust,
Leis und trauernd überblieben.
