Sterne,
In des Himmels Ferne!
Träumt sich auch in jenem Raum
Eines Lebens flücht'ger Traum ?
Hebt Entzücken, Wonne,
Trauer, Wehmut, Schmerz,
Jenseit unsrer Sonne
Auch ein fühlend Herz?

Sterne,
In des Himmels Ferne!
Winkt ihr nicht schon Himmelsruh'
Mir aus euren Fernen zu?
Wird nicht einst dem Müden
Auf den goldnen Au'n
Ungetrübter Frieden
In die Seele tau'n?

You who with rays from a better world
brighten the dimness of earth,
are not spiritual eyes looking
earthward from you,
breathing peace
into my beclouded heart?

Stars 
in the distant heavens!
Is also in your realm
a life's fleeting dream being dreamed?
Are delight, joy,
mourning, melancholy, pain
rising out beyond our sun
within a heart full of feeling?

Stars 
in the distant heavens!
Are you not already sending me a sign
of heavenly peace from your remoteness?
Will not soon the weary one
in golden meadows
feel untroubled peace
falling like dew into his soul?

Stars 
in the distant heavens!
Until my spirit lifts its wings
and soars upward to your peace,
may my longing be set on you,
hoping, full of faith!
Oh, you lovely ones, beautiful ones,
could you ever disappoint me?

Leben wir, so leben wir dem Herren, 
Sterben wir, so sterben wir dem Herrn;
Wer kann uns zu ihm den Zugang sperren? 
Er ist überall, uns nirgends fern. 

Dessen Hand durch's Leben uns geleitet, 
Auch im Tode bleibt uns ihr Geleit; 
Wer die Zeit mit Gottvertraun durchschreitet, 
Geht mit Gottvertraun zur Ewigkeit. 

Deine Hand wird schützend mich bedecken,
Wo des Grabes Dunkelheit mich deckt;
Aus dem Grabe wird Dein Hauch mich wecken, 
Der den Lenz im Winter auferweckt.

Waldwipfel erblühen,
vom Lenzhauch geschwellt.
Zugvogel mit Singen
erhebt seine Schwingen,
ich fahr' in die Welt!

Mir ist zum Geleite
in lichtgoldnem Kleide
Frau Sonne bestellt.
Sie wirft meinen Schatten
auf  blumige Matten.
Ich fahr' in die Welt!

Mein Hutschmuck die Rose,
mein Lager im Moose,
der Himmel mein Zelt;
mag lauern und trauern,
wer will, hinter Mauern
ich fahr' in die Welt!

swelled by the breeze.
swallows with singing
flap their wings,
I'm going out into the world!

I am like the companion
in light golden clothes
that Mrs. Sun ordered.
She casts my shadow
on carpets of flowers.
I'm going out into the world!

My hat decoration is the rose,
my bed in the moss,
the sky is my tent;
Whoever likes to can stay and mourn,
behind walls
I'm going out into the world!

Die Engel [Freude-jauchzend]1 fliegen;
