spielt des Mondes Silber; die zarte Dämmerung
kann  die Einsamkeit nicht zersteuen:

Und die Nachtigal singt nicht. Sie beugt müde
ihr Köpfchen unter der Trauerweide, und stirbt;
während der Wind wie ein Seufzen durch deren Haupt fährt:

vorrei porre la man su la tua testa

vorrei volare tra 'l baglior che scende
in pioggia d'oro su 'l deserto lito,
e per le nubi che 'l tramonto accende

Wenn ich dich trunkenen Auges beobachte, und lau
du endlich lächelst, ach du wandelbares Herz;
wann   kehrst du zurück an meine Seite,
denn deinetwegen  leide ich tiefen Kummer.

Der heiße Wunsch zu sterben
Überkommt mich in ruhigem, innigem  Drang:
Will  dir die Hand auf den Kopf legen
Und dich auf immer verehren und segnen.

Will fliegen mit dem niederzuckenden Blitz
Im goldenen Regen über die Steinwüste,
und mit den Wolken, die der Wind unermüdlich
in alle Ewigkeit vor sich her treibt.

Or dunque addio! Con le pupille ardenti
che mi pioveano in cor fiamme ed oblío,
con le dolci pupille ancor mi tenti
inutilmente: addio!

Or che l'autunno muore, or che di noia
pallido è il cielo, e lugubre il cipresso
regna su 'l colle inseminato, or muoia,
muoia l'amore anch'esso!

Ahi! senza te sarà un'atroce smania
la vita mia; ma nel mio freddo aspetto
non vedrai quanto spasimo dilania
il mio superbo petto.

Oh! potess'io, freddissima ed inerte
come l'inverno che avviluppa il mondo,
trascorrere le lunghe ore deserte
in un oblío profondo;

e dileguarmi inconsciamente, al pari
di rotta nave abbondonata a l'onda,
che a poco a poco pe 'i silenti mari
dilungasi e sprofonda.

Dann leb wohl! Wenn die feurigen Blicke
Die mich ins Herz treffen könnten aufflammen und verlöschen
Wenn die süßen Blicke mich vergeblich
In Versuchung führen wollen: leb wohl!

Wenn dann der Herbst stirbt, wenn alle Sorgen
Verblassen wie der Himmel, und dunkel die Zypresse
aufragt auf dem fruchtbaren Hügel, dann stirbt
dann stirbt die erschöpfte Liebe.

Ach! Ohne dich wird mein Leben ein schreckliches
Wüten sein, aber in meinem  freudlosen Harren
merke ich nicht wie der heftiger Schmerz
mir die stolze Brust zerreißt.

Oh, meine Lebenskraft, wie bist du  kalt und leblos
wie der Winter, der die Welt umschlingt und
Ebenen und Wüsten bedeckt
in tiefem Vergessen.

Und vergehe unmerklich, wie das
Seinem Kurs über die Wellen folgende Boot,
sich nach und nach  auf dem stillen Meer
entfernt und am Horizont versinkt.
