Zur Schmiede ging ein junger Held,
Er hatt ein gutes Schwert bestellt.
Doch als er's wog in freier Hand,
Das Schwert er viel zu schwer erfand.
Der alte Schmied den Bart sich streicht:
»Das Schwert ist nicht zu schwer noch leicht,
Zu schwach ist Euer Arm, ich mein,
Doch morgen soll geholfen sein.«
»Nein, heut! bei aller Ritterschaft!
Durch meine, nicht durch Feuers Kraft.«
Der Jüngling spricht's, ihn Kraft durchdringt,
Das Schwert er hoch in Lüften schwingt.

Un jeune héros allait à la forge
Où il avait commandé une épée.
Mais quand il la soupesa de sa main libre,
Il trouva l'épée beaucoup trop lourde.
Le vieux forgeron se caressa la barbe :
« L'épée n'est ni trop lourde ni trop légère,
Je pense que votre bras est trop faible,
Mais demain cela sera résolu. »
« Non, aujourd'hui ! Par toute la chevalerie !
Par ma force, non par celle du feu. »
Dit le jeune homme, la force lui vint,
Et il brandit l'épée haut dans les airs.
