В тумане дремлет ночь. Безмолвная звезда 
Сквозь дымку облаков мерцает одиноко.
Звенят бубенцами уныло и далеко
Коней пасущихся стада.
Как ночи облака, изменчивые думы 
Несутся надо мной, тревожны и угрюмы; 
В них отблески надежд, когда-то дорогих, 
Давно потерянных, давно уж не живых.
В них сожаления... и слёзы.
Несутся думы те без цели и конца,
То, превратясь в черты любимого лица,
Зовут, рождая вновь в душе былые грёзы:
То, слившись в черный мрак, полны немой угрозы
Грядущего борьбой пугают робкий ум,
И слышится вдали. Нестройной жизни шум,
Толпы бездушной смех, вражды коварный ропот,
Житейской мелочи назаглушимый шопот,
Унылый смерти звон!... 
Предвестница звезда, как будто полная стыда,
Скрывает светлый лик в тумане безотрадном,
Как будущность моя, немом и непроглядном.

Élégie

Dans la brume la nuit sommeille. L'étoile silencieuse
À travers le voile de nuages scintille solitaire.
faisant sonner tristement leurs clochettes au loin,
Des troupeaux de chevaux pâturent.
Comme les nuages de la nuit, mes pensées changeantes
Flottent au-dessus de moi, troublées et maussades ;
Il y a des reflets d'espoirs en elles, chers un jour,
Perdus depuis longtemps, morts depuis longtemps.
En elles il y a du chagrin... et des larmes.
Les pensées courent sans but et sans fin,
Parfois, transformées en les traits d'un visage aimé,
Elles m'appellent, faisant renaître à nouveau dans mon âme des rêves du passé,
Parfois, combinées en une obscurité noire, pleines de menace muette,
Elles effraient avec la bataille du futur mon esprit timide,
Et j'entends au loin le bruit dissonant de la vie,
Le rire de la foule sans cœur, le murmure d'une animosité perfide,
Le chuchotement impossible à étouffer de la banalité de la vie,
La triste sonnerie de la mort !...
Une étoile qui s'élève, comme si elle était pleine de honte,
Cache son visage brillant dans une brume désolée,
Comme mon futur, muet et impénétrable.
