Sieh, Doris, wie vom Mond bestrahlt Die Tanne [glänzt . . . . wie]1 schön! Vor jedem Baum hab' ich im Wald Die Tanne mir ersehn. Wie ruhig steht sie da im Thal, Gepflanzt von Gottes Hand! Es bleicht kein Reif, kein Sonnenstrahl Ihr [ewiggrün]2 Gewand. Auf ihren Ästen baut kein Wurm, Kein falscher Weih sein Nest, Und neigt sich gleich ihr Haupt im Sturm, So steht ihr Fuss doch fest. So steht sie, bis aus schwüler Luft Ein Blitz sie niederstreckt, Und [dann noch]3 haucht sie süssen Duft Bis kühles Moos sie deckt. Deckt, Doris, mich einst kühles Moos, So reiss im Mondesschein Aus unsrer Kinder Arm dich los Und wall' in diesen Hain. An meine Tanne hingelegt, Sing dann in heiterm Ton Dein Lied, das mich so oft bewegt, Das vom [Hylarion.]4 Und dringen Seufzer in das Lied, So blick' den Himmel an, Von welchem der herunter sieht, Der uns vereinen kann. Und wenn, wie von des Zephyrs Wehn, Der Tanne Wipfel bebt; So ist's mein Geist, der ungesehn Ob deinem Scheitel schwebt. Regarde, Doris, comme la lune éclaire Brillamment le sapin... Comme il est beau ! De tous les arbres dans la forêt, j'ai Choisi le sapin. Comme il se tient paisiblement dans la vallée, Planté par la main de Dieu ! Aucun gel, aucun rayon de soleil ne fait pâlir Sa robe éternellement verte. Sur ses branches aucun ver, Aucun milan fourbe ne construit son nid, Et si la tête du sapin peut se courber dans la tempête, Son pied se tient néanmoins solidement. Ainsi il se tient jusqu'à ce que venant de l'air humide Un éclair le mette à terre, Et même alors il exhale un doux parfum Jusqu'à ce que la mousse fraîche le recouvre. Si un jour, Doris, je suis recouvert de mousse fraîche, Dans le clair de lune arrache-toi Des bras de nos enfants Et marche dans ce bosquet. Allongé sous mon sapin, Chante alors avec des notes gaies Ton chant qui m'a si souvent ému, Celui sur Hilarion. Et si des soupirs se glissent dans le chant Alors regarde en haut vers le ciel, D'où celui qui regarde en bas Peut nous réunir.
