Tonleiterähnlich steiget dein Klaggesang
Vollschwellend auf, wie wenn man Bouteillen füllt:
    Es steigt und steigt im Hals der Flasche -
        Sieh, und das liebliche Naß schäumt über.

O Sängerin, dir möcht ich ein Liedchen weihn,
Voll Lieb und Sehnsucht! aber ich stocke schon;
    Ach, mein unselig Gleichnis regt mir
        Plötzlich den Durst und mein Gaumen lechzet.

Verzeih! im Jägerschlößchen ist frisches Bier
Und Kegelabend heut: ich versprach es halb
    Dem Oberamtsgerichtsverweser,
        Auch dem Notar und dem Oberförster.

Ta complainte s'élève telle une gamme ascendante,
Effervescente, comme lorsqu'on emplit une bouteille :
   Elle monte et monte dans le goulot de la bouteille -
      Vois, et la chère mousse déborde.

Ô chanteur, je voudrais te dédier une chansonnette,
Pleine d'amour et de désirs ! Mais j'achoppe déjà;
   Hélas ma funeste parabole m'émeut,
      Soudain j'ai soif et le palais me brûle.

Pardon ! Il y a de la bière fraîche dans le pavillon de chasse
Et ce soir une partie de quilles : je l'ai à moitié promise
   Au président du tribunal,
      Ainsi qu'au notaire et au chef garde forestier.
