El meu cavall està cansat de ser a la quadra, el meu falcó està tip del caputxó i la perxa, inactiu, el meu llebrer menysté el menjar, i la solitud d'aquesta torre em fa emmalaltir. Ai, si pogués ser com era abans. La cacera del cérvol era el meu element! El perdiguer deixat anar, l'arc ben tensat: sí, a aquesta mena de vida sóc propici! Detesto el toc del rellotge de la torre, no m'agrada veure com passa el temps, quan de mica en mica, al llarg de les parets, els raigs del sol s'esquitllen lentament. En altre temps, l'alosa solia portar-me el matí, la fosca gralla cantava per fer-me adormir; a les estances reials d'aquest castell, cap lloc em pot complaure. De bon matí, quan ressona el cant de l'alosa, no em delecta l'esguard d'Ellen, no vaig a l'encalç del cérvol que fuig a través del bosc, per tornar a casa quan cau la rosada del capvespre. La teva salutació de benvinguda no ressona al meu encontre, ja no puc posar la caça als teus peus, mai més s'esvanirà el capvespre per a nosaltres: perduts, perduts són l'amor i la vida.
