White Egret
Language: English  after the Chinese (中文)
A white egret glides down autumn water,
Flying in solitude like falling frost.
An idle heart in no rush to go,
Standing alone by a sandbar.
Translator's notes
Line 1: Autumn water, describing a broad and flat body of water.
Li Bo is among the most famous and influential ancient Chinese poets, with over a thousand of his works having been preserved. One of the romantic artistic techniques of Li Bo's poetry is the combination of personification and metaphor, describing things, and relating things to people. For example, White Egret uses the descriptions of egret, hoarfrost, autumn water and a sandbar, literally depicting a deserted environment and a lone white egret, but represents the people outside the painting facing the bleak autumn, feeling lonely in the journey away from home and friends.
