by George Gordon Noel Byron, Lord Byron (1788 - 1824)
Translation by Franz Theremin (1780 - 1846)

Thy days are done
Language: English
Our translations:  CAT
Thy days are done, thy fame begun;
  Thy country's strains record
The triumphs of her chosen Son,
  The slaughters of his sword!
The deeds he did, the fields he won,
  The freedom he restored!

Though thou art fall'n, while we are free
Thou shalt not taste of death!
The generous blood that flowed from thee
  Disdained to sink beneath:
Within our veins its currents be,
  Thy spirit on our breath!

Thy name our charging hosts along,
  Shall be the battle-word!
Thy fall, the theme of choral song
  From virgin voices poured!
To weep will do thy glory wrong:
  Thou shalt not be deplored.

Saul
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Dein Leben schliesst, dein Ruhm begann;
dein Volk, o teurer Held
erzählt im Lied, was du getan,
wie du gekämpft im Feld,
wie uns dein Mut'den Sieg gewann,
die Freiheit hergestellt.

Die Freiheit, die du gabst,
entreisst auch dich dem Todeslos.
Dein edles Heldenblut zerfleusst
nicht in der Erde Schoss.
Es wall' in uns mit deinem Geist
der sich in uns ergoss.

Dein Heldenname tön' entlang,
als Schlachtruf, unsre Reihn.
Von deinem Fall sei der Gesang,
so dir die Jungfrau'n weihn.
Die Klage wär kein würd'ger Dank,
beweint sollst du nicht sein.
