A la petita ciutat hi ha una gran alegria, s’hi fa un casament amb música i dansa, per als convidats, el vi brilla ben vermell, només la núvia està pàl·lida com una morta. Sí, morta per aquell a qui no ha oblidat, i que tanmateix a la festa no és el nuvi: ell és allà, a la guingueta, enmig dels convidats i toca el violí prou ben alegrament. Ell toca el violí, els seus cabells s’agrisen, sonen les cordes, estridents i fort, l’estreny al seu cor sense tenir compte de si es trenca en mil trossos. És ben horrible quan un mor d’aquesta manera, quan el seu jove cor malda encara per la felicitat. No puc ni vull veure-ho per més temps! Això em faria trastornar el cap. Qui sou vosaltres que em senyaleu amb el dit? Oh Déu – protegeix-nos amb la teva gràcia, que ningú sigui dominat per la follia; no sóc res més que un pobre músic.
