Sant Antoni va a fer el seu sermó i troba l’església buida. Aleshores se’n va vers els rius per fer la prèdica als peixos; ells bateguen amb les cues que brillen a la llum del sol. Les carpes amb els seus ous han vingut totes aquí, amb les boques ben obertes escolten amb atenció. Mai cap prèdica havia agradat tant a les carpes. Els lluços de boca punxeguda que sempre s’estan barallant, han vingut de pressa nedant per escoltar el Sant. Mai cap prèdica havia agradat tant als lluços. També aquelles fantàstiques criatures que sempre fan dejuni, els bacallans vull dir, han vingut pel sermó. Mai cap prèdica havia agradat tant als bacallans. Les exquisides anguiles i els esturions amb els que els nobles fan llurs banquets, s’han pres la molèstia d’escoltar la prèdica. Mai cap prèdica havia agradat tant a les anguiles. Els crancs també i les tortugues que normalment són tan lents, s’han apressat des del fons per escoltar aquesta veu. Mai cap prèdica havia agradat tant als crancs. Els peixos grans, els petits, els selectes i els comuns, aixequen els seus caps com criatures racionals: per la voluntat de Déu escolten la prèdica. Acabat el sermó, cadascun fa mitja volta, els lluços romanen sent lladres, les anguiles grans amants. La prèdica els ha agradat, però segueixen sent els mateixos d’abans. Els crancs caminen endarrere, els bacallans resten grassos, les carpes segueixen afartant-se, la prèdica s’ha oblidat. El sermó els ha agradat, però segueixen sent els mateixos d’abans.
