Ik heb een postduif die voor me werkt,
Zij is zeer gedienstig en trouw.
Zij meet haar route heel precies
En vliegt door storm en kou.
Ik stuur haar weg wel duizendmaal,
Voor ‘n boodschap ver op reis,
Voorbij aan menig lieflijk oord,
Tot bij mijn liefste’s huis.
Daar kijkt zij voorzichtig en steels door het raam,
Bespiedt het gedrag van mijn fee,
Reikt haar mijn groeten schertsend aan,
En neemt de hare mee.
Geen briefje hoef ik te schrijven meer,
Mijn tranen zelf geef ik haar,
Nee, zij bezorgt ze nooit verkeerd,
Staat altijd voor mij klaar.
Bij dag, bij nacht, in weer en wind,
Haar maakt het weinig uit.
Als zij maar vliegen, vliegen kan,
Gaat zij naar noord en zuid.
