Ho una colomba viaggiatrice al mio servizio, che è devota e fedele, mai accorcia il viaggio e non vola mai via. La mando migliaia di volte per il suo servizio tutti i giorni, lontano a qualche luogo caro, fino alla casa dell'amata. Là guarda segratemente dalla finestra, spiando il suo sguardo e il suo passo, consegna scherzando i miei saluti e porta con sé quelli di lei. Non devo più scrivere lettere, le consegno le lacrime, oh, non le porta certo volentieri, ma mi serve fedelmente. Di giorno, di notte, sveglia o in sogno, per lei è lo stesso, quando può andare in giro, si sente ricchissima! Non si stanca, non si annoia, la via per lei è sempre nuova, non ha bisogno di legami, non ha bisogno di ricompensa, tanto mi è fedele la colomba! Per questo la stringo al petto così teneramente, sicuro del premio più bello, si chiama - la nostalgia! La conoscete? - la messaggera del pensiero fedele.
