Il bosco si fa dorato, le foglie cadono, com'è desolato e muto! I ruscelletti soli vanno per i faggeti, scorrendo dolcemente come in sogno. E le campane della sera risuonano lontane dal limitare del bosco. Perché volete attirarmi con tanta forza in questa solitudine? Come al mio paese squillano queste campane dalla quieta fanciullezza. Io mi volgo sorpreso, ahimè, ciò che mi amava è lontano! E prorompete dunque, antichi canti, e spezzatemi il cuore! Un'altra volta ancora io saluto da lontano, ciò che solo ho caro, ma mi vince la malinconia come nella tomba.
