Ich sah die Sonne drüber glühn -
Mich dünkt, ich seh' es noch.

Es war ein Duft, es war ein Glanz,
Die Seele sog ihn durstend ein.
Ich pflückte sie zu einem Kranz - 
Wo mag er blieben sein?

Ich such' an jedem Blümchen nach
Um jenen Schmelz, um jenes Licht,
Ich forsche jeden Sommertag -
Doch solche find' ich nicht.

Ihr wußtet nimmer, was ich trieb?
Ich suchte meinen alten Kranz.
Er war so frisch, so licht, so lieb -
Es war der Jugendglanz.

Vedevo il sole splendere su di essi - 
mi sembra di vederlo ancora.

Era un profumo, era uno splendore, 
che l'anima beveva assetata.
Li colsi per fare una ghirlanda - 
dove può essere rimasta?

Io cerco in ogni fiorellino, 
in ogni splendore, in ogni luce,
ne vado in traccia ogni giorno d'estate - 
ma non trovo nulla di simile.

Non sapeste mai per che cosa mi affannavo?
Cercavo la mia vecchia ghirlanda. 
Era così fresca, così luminosa, così bella...
Era lo splendore della gioventù.
