Sous le dôme étoilé qui sur nos fronts flamboie ;
J'écoute si d'en haut il tombe quelque bruit ;
Dans ce monde endormi n'échauffaient que mon âme ;
Qu'à les comprendre seul j'étais prédestiné ;
Le roi mystérieux de la pompe nocturne ;

Sometimes, when all is asleep, I sit...
Language: English  after the French (Français)
Sometimes, when all is asleep, I sit full of joy
Under the starry dome that blazes overhead;
I listen for any sound that might fall from on high;
And time strikes me in vain with its wing
When I contemplate, transported, that eternal festival
That the radiant sky presents to the world at night.
Often then I've thought that those suns of flame
In all this sleeping world warmed my soul only;
That I alone was predestined to understand them;
That I myself, dark and taciturn vain shadow, was
The mysterious king of that nocturnal ceremony;
That the sky lit up for me alone!
