Amb un bastó acabat de tallar, quan, de bon matí camino travessant els boscos, amunt i avall dels tossals: llavors, com l’ocell al brancatge que canta i es belluga, o, com el raïm daurat que percep l’esperit de la joia als primers raigs del sol: així percebia també el meu vell, estimat Adam la febre de la tardor i la primavera, divinament ardida, i mai presa a la lleugeresa, primera delícia del paradís. Així doncs, tu no ets pas tan dolent, oh vell Adam, com diuen els mestres severs; tu estimes i lloes encara, cantes i enalteixes encara, com si eternament fos el primer dia de la Creació, al teu estimat Creador i Protector.
