Quand je m'en vais de bon matin avec mon bâton coupé de frais à travers bois, par monts et par vaux, alors, comme un petit oiseau chante et s'agite dans la ramée, ou comme la vigne d'or absorbe au petit matin les délicieuses émanations du premier soleil, ainsi mon cher vieil Adam ressent l'excitation de l'automne et du printemps, volupté bénie de Dieu et jamais perdue de l'Eden originel. Allons, ô vieil Adam, tu n'es pas si mauvais que le disent les maîtres austères ; comme aux jours éternellement neufs de la Création, tu continues à aimer et à rendre grâce, tu offres encore et toujours tes chants et tes louanges à ton Créateur et protecteur vénéré. Puisse-t-Il m'accorder que ma vie entière dans un léger échauffement, s'identifie à cette promenade matinale !
